Same problem here. Got a New Pi 5 and RC522 rfid device expecting it to work... but GPIO seems incompatible with the Pi 5.
I tried installing rpi-lgpio instead, even modifying some import statements in MFRC522.py and simpleMFRC522.py, but not luck. Though I am not confident that perhaps there is some further conflict or installation issue I don't understand.
I would love to hear if anyone gets this working and how!
In the meantime I am going to pick up a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 and give that a try instead of the Pi 5. For the use in the art-installation we have in mind, the smaller low-power pi might be preferred anyway anyway. Wish me luck!
