The "should" is doing a lot of lifting here. As much as I'd like this to be true, there are things that were trivial with RPi.GPIO that wrappers and compatibility shims would, at best, complicate and at worst break completely. Since we're dealing with external devices- water pumps, anyone?- the consequences of even minor failure can be pretty significant.Had Raspberry Pi pre-installed this drop-in replacement rather than a 'RPi.GPIO' which can't work, I am not sure many people would have had anything stop working, would have noticed that anything had changed.
I'd much, much rather software just break and have to deal with it directly, than have to deal with the potential fallout of someone's well-intentioned effort to make it continue working as-is.
