Just in case anyone else is struggling with this I'm going to be controversial and state that currently the Pi 5 can no longer interface with non conventional serial hardware (i.e. anything greater than 8 bit serial). I'd be delighted if someone can prove me wrong but for now I'm saying that it is a fact that with the demise of pigpio on the Pi 5 (gpiozero doesn't do bitbanging serial) the Pi 5 needs additional hardware to communicate with anything outside the norm. Pity but there it is.
