I couldn't have said it better myself. I am struggling with the exact same problem, and I have searched in all of the same places. I have some python experience, but not nearly enough to build a bridge between the RPi.GPIO and libgpiod or GPIO Zero libraries.
Most of my previous experience is with Arduino and it's not helping, either. Just wanted to let you know you aren't struggling alone. This is the start of week 2 of me devoting a bit of time here and there.
